Black History Month is a time to honour the legacy and history of Black Canadians past, present and future. Celebrate through dance, film, music and art this month with these five outstanding Oakville Black History Month events:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Black History Month Kickoff Celebration<\/a>: Feb. 7, 2019:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Black<\/p>\n

Let the bells ring out and the banners fly this February at the Town of Oakville and Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton’s Black History Month Kickoff Celebration! This event will feature cultural exhibitions from the Oakville Museum, Sheridan College, and the Association of African Canadian Artists, and amazing artistic performances from Diana Braithwaite and Chris Whiteley, John Campbell, Njacko Backo and Ballet Creole.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Art Hive Open Studio<\/a>: Feb. 9, 2019\u00a0& Feb. 23, 2019:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Art<\/p>\n

Venture into visual arts this month with two Art Hive Open Studio events on Feb. 9 and Feb. 23. Art Hives are inclusive community art studios that can pop-up anywhere like a local library, community centre or even museum. Open to artists of all interest and skill-level, Oakville\u2019s art hives will be facilitated by visual artist Camille King and will concentrate on blending art-making with African Canadian experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Public Film Screening: Feb. 21,\u00a02019:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fancy yourself a film buff? Swing by Sheridan College on Feb. 21 for their public film screening of one of 2018\u2019s top-grossing films, <\/span>Black Panther<\/span><\/i>. This showing will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Sheridan faculty and speakers from the local Black community. Learn more about local perspectives and experiences with this film-tastic event. <\/span><\/p>\n

4. “Beyond the Journey”: African Canadian Art Exhibition<\/a>: Feb. 1 – 28, 2019:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Explore vibrant portraits of the African Canadian experience with a tour through the \u201cBeyond the Journey\u201d art exhibit at Oakville Town Hall. This colourful display of artistry and history includes 50 artworks by contemporary African Canadian artists featuring portraits, landscapes, abstract pieces and more. Book a tour now before the exhibit closes at the end of the month. <\/span><\/p>\n

5. Oakville Museum Black History Exhibits<\/a>: Feb. 1 – 28, 2019:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Follow along with first-person accounts of the Underground Railroad and life after emancipation at the Oakville Museum\u2019s incredible exhibits, \u201cFreedom, Opportunity and Family: Oakville\u2019s Black History\u201d and \u201cThe Underground Railroad: Next Stop Freedom\u201d. These detailed and well-curated displays are a fantastically immersive way to learn more about Oakville\u2019s Black history.<\/span><\/p>\n
