Since Oakville is so rich in history, I thought it would be a rewarding project to document \u201cthen and now\u201d photos of 10 Oakville historical landmarks, comparing old photos to present-day views.<\/p>\n<p>Though most of the landmarks that I found still stand today and look almost the same as they did in the past, some have changed drastically. Take a look at the then and now photos below. But first, consider this. When comparing then and now photos there are two ways to look at them. Firstly, you can focus on how much has changed or secondly, you can marvel at what remains the same.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Oakville House Hotel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1556\" height=\"608\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15453\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2oakvillehouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2oakvillehouse.jpg 1556w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2oakvillehouse-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2oakvillehouse-768x300.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakvillehistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OHS<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n<p>The Oakville House Hotel was located at 125 Lakeshore Road East. Murray Hamilton Williams was the owner of this iconic hotel.\u00a0 Sometime in the 1980s the original building was torn down and was reconstructed to a similar design.\u00a0 It was formerly located where <a href=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/partner\/paradiso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paradiso<\/a> is located in <a href=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/experience-oakville\/downtown-oakville\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Downtown Oakville<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lakeside Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1556\" height=\"605\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15454\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/3lakeside.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/3lakeside.jpg 1556w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/3lakeside-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/3lakeside-768x299.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lakeside Park is located at the end of Navy Street in <a href=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/experience-oakville\/downtown-oakville\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Downtown Oakville<\/a>. It is settled on the shores of Lake Ontario and is home to Oakville\u2019s First Post office and the Thomas House. This park was a town favourite in the past and still is today.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Erchless Estate<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1556\" height=\"608\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15455\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/4erchless.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/4erchless.jpg 1556w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/4erchless-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/4erchless-768x300.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakville.ca\/museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Erchless Estate at Oakville Museum<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Robert Kerr Chisholm, the son of William Chisholm, was the Customs Collector for the Town of Oakville. His father deeded him the Customs House, and he made it his family home.<\/p>\n<p>In 1858, he finished building a grand house on the same property naming it \u201cErchless\u201d, after his family\u2019s ancestral home in Scotland. For over six generations the Chisholm family lived on the estate. Today, Erchless Estate is the home of the Oakville Museum.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lakeshore Road<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1551\" height=\"605\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15456\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/5lakeshore.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/5lakeshore.jpg 1551w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/5lakeshore-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/5lakeshore-768x300.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1551px) 100vw, 1551px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakvillehistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OHS<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Believe it or not, Lakeshore Road East used to be called a different name. Before 1965, this road used to be called Colborne Street. Some also called this road \u201cthe main street\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Thomas House<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1556\" height=\"605\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15457\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/6thomashouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/6thomashouse.jpg 1556w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/6thomashouse-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/6thomashouse-768x299.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Thomas House was originally built in 1829 and was the home of the Thomas family. The Thomas House was bought by the Oakville Historical Society and was moved to Lakeside Park in 1955 as an effort to protect the heritage of the home. In the summer, The Thomas house operates as a museum. The Oakville Historical Society offers tours to local residents and visitors to give them a first-hand look at how a pioneer home was operated in the 1800s.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Oakville\u2019s First Post Office<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1556\" height=\"605\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15458\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/7post-office.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/7post-office.jpg 1556w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/7post-office-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/7post-office-768x299.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakvillehistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OHS<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Oakville&#8217;s First Post Office was built in 1835. It was saved from demolition and moved to Lakeside Park in 1950. Located on 37 Lakeshore Road West, Turner chapel still stands. However, today it operates as an Antiques and Appraisers store.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Sovereign House<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1556\" height=\"605\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15460\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/9soverign.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/9soverign.jpg 1556w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/9soverign-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/9soverign-768x299.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakvillehistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OHS<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n<p>The Sovereign House was built approximately in 1825 and was owned by Phillip Sovereign and then his son, Charles. Acclaimed author <a href=\"https:\/\/oakvillenews.org\/topics\/mazo-de-la-roche\/\">Mazo De La Roche <\/a>lived in the house from 1910-14. When the house was about to be demolished in 1988, the property owners agreed to donate it to the Town of Oakville. Today, the house can be found at 7 West River Street.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bronte Harbour\/Pier<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1556\" height=\"602\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15461\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/10brontepier.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/10brontepier.jpg 1556w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/10brontepier-300x116.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/10brontepier-768x297.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakvillehistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OHS<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n<p>The Bronte Harbour was created on the lands of the Mississaugas of New Credit Nation. This waterway was used for food and commerce. After the European settlement, the Harbour became a\u00a0 commercial port used by merchants and sailors.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Knox Pebestriayn Church<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1135\" height=\"892\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15463\" src=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/newknoxBIMG.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/newknoxBIMG.jpg 1135w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/newknoxBIMG-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.zarrtech.net\/visitoakville\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/newknoxBIMG-768x604.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1135px) 100vw, 1135px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakvillehistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OHS<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/knoxoakville.com\/\">Knox Presbyterian Church<\/a> was finished in 1885 and was constructed by James McDonald Jr. and local carpenters. It still stands beautifully on the corner of Dunn Street and Lakeshore Road East in <a href=\"https:\/\/visitoakville.com\/experience-oakville\/neighbourhoods\/downtown-oakville\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Downtown Oakville<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s truly amazing to see how far Oakville has come through photography, as well as how much effort the Town of Oakville has put in to preserve these historical landmarks. I honestly never knew much about Oakville history before this project. I never knew that this small city nestled on the shore of Lake Ontario had such a rich history.
