Vogue magazine famously compared a 1926 short, black, Chanel dress to the Model T-Ford \u2014 timeless and elegant. Now, the Oakville museum is celebrating black\u2019s lasting impact on women\u2019s fashion in a new exhibition called \u201c50 Shades of Black.\u201d<\/p>\n

The exhibition includes 50 black dresses from the past 150 years. There is a story behind each of the pieces \u2014 many of which, were worn or owned by Oakville women.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to be Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s to look amazing in a little black dress.<\/p>\n

The classic look spans generations.<\/p>\n

And variations of what is now a wardrobe staple can be traced back \u2014 in Oakville\u2019s history at least \u2014 for 150 years in a new exhibition called \u201c50 Shades of Black.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn Cross is the Oakville Museum Curator of Collections: \u201cThis dress was given to us by Dora Matthews and she was appointed the fashion coordinator of Eaton\u2019s Fashion bureau.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like this late 40\u2032s couture, each of the dresses in the Oakville museum\u2019s collection has a story. Curator Carolyn Cross says many of the pieces were worn by Oakville residents: \u201cIt\u2019s really not a simple a simple chronology of black clothing it\u2019s really about the women who wore them.\u201d<\/p>\n

From this this original Chanel: \u201cIt was worn by an Oakville woman who was a model and modeled in NYC and Paris.\u201d<\/p>\n

To mourning dresses inspired by Queen Victoria: \u201cImelda Chisholm who lived here in Oakville and this is the actual dress in the photograph<\/p>\n

The collection is sure to impress history buffs, as well as fashionistas.<\/p>\n

It wouldn\u2019t be a 50 Shades exhibition without one grey dress. This wool Lanvin from 1934.<\/p>\n

But of all of the costumes in the museum\u2019s extensive collection \u2014 it\u2019s no wonder they chose black to be the star of this show: \u201cTo paraphrase Christian Dior, black really suits any shape, any age, any occasion really. It\u2019s something that\u2019s just a timeless piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

The self guided exhibition runs until September 14th at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre. And it\u2019s free.<\/p>\n
